1 Professional Development Day 2016
Supporting those “OTHER” Benchmarks in Science for Grade 8 Presented by: Sonia Burkholder-Blackstone, Kim Dailey, Connie Stevens, Justin Space, Ivette Ciccio, Betsy Baines, and Lynnea Weissman Twitter #lakescience

2 Lake County Schools We Believe Vision Statement Mission Statement
A dynamic, progressive and collaborative learning community embracing change and diversity where every student will graduate with the skills needed to succeed in postsecondary education and the workplace. Mission Statement The mission of the Lake County Schools is to provide every student with individual opportunities to excel. We Believe Education is the foundation for everyone’s future. Education is a lifelong process. All students can learn. Students should be civic-minded and embrace future roles in the community. Parents/guardians, community, and schools are partners in a student’s education. Providing a safe, resource-filled learning environment is essential. Students will graduate prepared for work and postsecondary education.

3 Consider highlighting or circling how the session will support the instructional framework.

4 Common Board Configuration
Bell Ringer: List three challenges you have in preparing for the SSA. Common Language: Annually Assessed Standards (benchmarks) Mini-Task Blueprints Learning Goals: Learners will understand how the annually assessed standards can be embedded within the 8th grade science course. Agenda: Gradual Release I Do: Review the structure of a mini-task We Do: Examine the benchmark-based mini-tasks and work through an example You Do: Collaborate with colleagues to create a mini task based on the NOS standards. Benchmarks: 6th and 7th grade Annually Assessed TEAM Domain 1- Lesson Segments Addressing Content (DQ 2, 3, 4) TEAM Domain 2- Planning and Preparing (DQ 10) Objective: Through collaboration with colleagues, teachers will be able to deepen their understanding of grade 6 and grade 7 standards that are assessed on the SSA in grade 8. Mini-tasks that are linked on the blueprint to support these standards will be reviewed and understood as a part of the review process. Summarizing Activity: Learners will present their mini tasks to the class. Essential Question: How do I review for the 8th Grade Assessment but teach my course? Next Steps: Teach the mini task as part of your instruction and provide feedback to the Science Program Specialist.

6 Call To Attention I say “Class” You say “Yes”

7 Learning Goal: Learners will understand how the annually assessed standards can be embedded within the 8th grade science course. Score 4.0 In addition to level 3.0, in-depth inferences and applications that go beyond what was taught. Score 3.0 The participant, without major errors or omissions, will understand how to: Learners will understand how the annually assessed standards can be embedded within the 8th grade science course. 2.0 There are no major errors or omissions regarding the simpler details and processes. The participant will understand how to: Find the mini tasks on the blueprints and identify the need to review the 6th and 7th grade standards. 1.0 With help, a partial understanding of some of the simpler details and processes and some of the more complex ideas and processes. 8 Statewide Science Assessment
The Statewide Science Assessment measures student achievement of the Next Generation Sunshine State Standards in science. Students in grades 5 and 8 participate in the statewide science assessment. Achievement Levels for Science were established in 2012 through a standard-setting process.

9 Why would students struggle with this question?

11 How do you make sure you are asking Level 3 and Level 4 questions while you teach?

12 How do 8th grade science teachers teach our entire curriculum map with depth and rigor while having to review the 6th and 7th grade standards for the Statewide Science Assessment? How do 8th grade science teachers teach their entire course as outlined by the State while having to review for the SSA?

13 The Mighty Mini Task Meticulously planned and focus on specific skills
Standards-based Specific detail in order to replicate the lesson Usually take about 20 to 30 minutes Uses content rich text

14 Mini Tasks to review Annually Assessed Standards for the SSA
Steps Criteria of a Mini-Task 1 Identify Standard and the targeted skill(s) 2 Write a mini-task prompt 3 Identify “meets expectations” criteria Level 4 – Level 3 – Level 2 – Level 1 – 4 (Teacher/Author) Complete the mini-task (revise if necessary)

15 Instructional Plan for Teaching Mini-Task
Steps Instructional Plan for Teaching Mini-Task 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 After teaching and scoring the mini-task, attach 2-3 student work samples.

19 Nature of Science Standards
Creating a Mini Task Groups of 3-5 people Give out mini task template and chart paper Assign a standard Plan a mini task using the template – remember to use content-rich text and focus on the standard Write your mini task on the chart paper Present your mini task to the class
