1 Traits & Heredity SPI & SPI

2 Vocabulary Words Instinct Gene Dominant Trait Recessive Trait Pedigree
Carrier Heredity Inherited Traits On a piece of notebook paper, you will write these 8 new words and their definition. You may use pages 100 – 104 in your book. This is due in class tomorrow!!

3 Learning Target I can tell the difference between inherited traits and those that can be attributed to the environment. SPI Repeat after me.

4 In our cells, where do you PREDICT our genetic material can be found??
Reproduction involves the transfer of genetic material from parent to offspring. The genetic material contains information that controls how the new individual will look and function. In our cells, where do you PREDICT our genetic material can be found??

5 Which traits could we receive from parents?
1.) Heredity is the passing down of traits from parents to offspring. Which traits could we receive from parents? Sorting Activity (Inherited & Acquired Traits)

6 What are some inherited traits that you possess?
2.) Inherited traits are traits that an offspring receives from its parent(s). Examples include flower color, the way you laugh, dimples, and eye color.

7 Yellow/Green Partner Observation
In your textbook, go to page 99. One of you will need a piece of paper and a pencil to record the results. Read the PURPOSE paragraph. Follow the PROCEDURE steps #1-2.

8 Regular vs. Hitchhiker’s Thumb

9 Attached vs. Unattached Lobe

10 Non-Rolled vs. Rolled Tongue

11 3.) An instinct is a way of acting or behaving that an animal is born with. Example: Spider spinning its web.

12 Think About It… A weaver bird hatches in a zoo rather than the wild. It is kept in a cage with other birds, such as robins. What type of nest will this bird build? Why?

13 4.) Learned behavior/ acquired trait - a behavior that is developed during an animal’s lifetime. Examples: teaching an animal tricks; to come when called or riding a motorcycle

14 5.) Imprinting is when animals form a bond with another organism shortly after being born. This is a learned/acquired behavior! Example: ducks recognize and follow their mother

15 Think About It… COMPARE how a person would receive a scar with how they would receive a birthmark.

16 6. ) Gregor Mendel studied heredity in the mid 1800’s. 7
6.) Gregor Mendel studied heredity in the mid 1800’s. 7.) He discovered that each inherited trait is controlled by two factors. The offspring receives one set from each parent. Dominant trait and Recessive trait

17 8.) Dominant trait– one that dominates, or masks, another form of that trait. Usually shown as a capital letter. Purple flowers are dominant and are represented with a capital “P”.

18 9.) Recessive trait – a trait that is hidden, or masked by another form of the trait. Usually shown as lowercase. White flowers are recessive and are represented with a lowercase “p”.

19 10.) A pedigree is a chart used to trace the history of traits in a family. Horizontal lines connect parents. Vertical lines connect parents to offspring.

20 A carrier is any individual who has inherited the gene for the trait but does not show that trait physically.

21 Let’s Review! Why are offspring similar to parents, but not exactly like either one of them? Traits are controlled by cell structures called, _______, which are found in the nucleus. The zebra’s stripes are a result of the environment A learned trait An inherited trait An example of mimicry

22 Let’s Review! Which is an inherited trait?
The ability to play the piano Eye color Learning to speak a different language A dog sitting on command Which is a learned/acquired trait? A bird building a nest A duck imprinting A spider building a web A baby breathing

23 Let’s Review! Which characteristic results from the interaction between an organism and its environment? A long tail Birthmark Scar Brown fur color

24 Homework Each night, you need to be studying your vocabulary words.
Monday: write your new vocabulary words. They are due TUESDAY! Tuesday-Thursday: work on answering the 8 questions that are on your homework sheet. They are due FRIDAY!
