French thinkers Voltaire and Rousseau began developing ideas that would ultimately shape the events that led to both the American and French revolutions. Isaac Newton – light and the spectrum Carl von Linne – organized science Samuel Johnson – Encyclopedia Britannica Thomas Paine – “Rights of Man” Mary Wollstonecraft -"A Vindication of the Rights of Women“ John Locke-authority of government comes only from the consent of the governed= Freedom The Enlightenment valued freedom for the common people, self governance, and natural rights with the central emphasis on liberty.
