1 Mission To promote voluntary philanthropy from Fellows and friends to support the College's goals for improving surgical patient care and ensuring the professional standing of surgeons wherever they practice. THE ACS FOUNDATION CELEBRATES 10 YEARS of ACS PHILANTHROPY Philanthropy has been a part of the College since the beginning in 1913 but it was formalized in 2005 with the establishment of the ACS Foundation. While we receive grants from corporations and foundations, our most generous donors are you…ACS Fellows!

Resident Research Scholarship Award Benjamin Bryner, MD University of Michigan Extracorporeal Life Support Laboratory “Through the ACS Resident Research Scholarship I have been exposed to all elements of surgical research, from research design and grant proposal writing to complex surgical experiments, and presentation at national meetings. This has been a wonderful experience, and I am very grateful to the College for making it possible.” Example of a scholarship recipient, whose award was funded through contributions to the ACS Foundation

Rural Surgery Fund Through the ACS Advisory Council for Rural Surgery, focused efforts are leading to new initiatives that will support the development of rural surgeon education, characterization of rural surgery through data analysis, and other plans to build the appeal and visibility of rural surgery. It has been a focus of the ACS Surgical Health Care Quality Forum. American College of Surgeons and Iowa Health Care Leaders Unite to Focus on Improving the Quality of Surgical Care in Rural Communities The Nora Patient Safety Institute, funded by philanthropic contributions, also hosts rural surgery skills training during Clinical Congress

Development of New Patient Education Materials Applied Medical Technology grant –home skills kit for patients requiring an enteral feeding tube Smith & Nephew grant - skills training resources for patients requiring complex wound management Ethicon grant – patient education for lung operation prep   Education grants have been secured to develop new patient education materials to support surgeons and their teams with resources for patients on postoperative recovery.    Applied Medical Technology’s grant will support development of a home skills kit for patients requiring an enteral feeding tube Smith & Nephew’s grant will support development of skills training resources for patients requiring complex wound management Resources are available on the College’s website at:

The Sustaining Fund Provides for Nonrevenue Benefits Scholarships Lifelong Learning Operation Giving Back Continuous Support of the Profession The Sustaining Fund is unrestricted use but does not support College overhead – it provides for nonrevenue benefits for the Fellowship and patients

To highlight the important role of philanthropy at the Centennial anniversary of the College, and To secure transformative, directed gifts to advance priority programs The 1913 Legacy Campaign which began in 2013 to celebrate the College’s centennial anniversary recently ended. Updates on the usage of campaign funds will be coming soon. Over $3 Million Donated – Thank You!

9 Invest in the Mission JOIN THE FELLOWS LEADERSHIP SOCIETY
The ACS Foundation’s premiere recognition program for major supporters of the College Gift can be made through a timed commitment The Fellows Leadership Society is the major gift program of the Foundation, and includes benefits such as increased donor recognition and an invitation to the FLS Luncheon and use of the Hospitality Center at Congress.

For more information, visit our exhibit or website The Fellows Leadership Society is the major gift program of the Foundation, and includes benefits such as increased donor recognition and an invitation to the FLS Luncheon. An annual pledge can be made. YFA & RAS Leadership Circle is for Young Fellows and RAS Members who donate a minimum of $200 per year gift and includes use of the FLS Hospitality Center at Congress; gifts to the annual fund can be made through an easy addition to your dues payments or online; and planned gifts are a great way to support the College and get recognition now while keeping lifetime assets.
