Mentor Orientation

Criteria for serving as a student mentor
1. Must be in good academic standing. 2. Must have completed one Special Education course or be currently enrolled in one Special Education course. 3. Must have clearances as per L.C.C.C. Teacher Education Manual. 4. Must be available to attend all mentoring sessions (Fridays. 10:00-a.m.- 12 noon, September 21st until December 7th, 2012).

Time Line Recruiting mentors from LCCC student population ( until , goal is 8 student mentors) Parkland students attend class on campus (SH 121 beginning Fridays, , 8:00 am until 12 noon) Friday, , LCCC mentors meet Parkland students, attend mentor orientation (10:00 a.m. to 12:00 noon) Friday, , first day of mentoring, icebreaker activities as a large group. Friday, , mentors begin individual activities with Parkland students. Friday, , 9:00 to 10:00 a.m., mid semester mentor meeting Friday, December 7, 2012, final session, 12:00 noon to 1:00 p.m., mentor debriefing Parkland students conclude fall semester

Role of LCCC Student Mentors
Serve as positive role models to support Parkland students making transition to young adult life. Support study skills. Design and conduct activities to support positive social development. Support Parkland staff efforts.

Key Professional Issues for mentors
Commitment: be on-time, attend all sessions! Confidentiality: maintain a professional level of confidentiality as per LCCC Teacher Education Manual. Professional Image/Attire. Professional Relationship with Students/Staff Communications: Communicate any concerns to appropriate staff. Be aware of student health/safety issues Let staff know where you and your student are at all times ( DO NOT LEAVE CAMPUS OR TRANSPORT IN YOUR VEHICLE!)

Procedures Sign-in weekly
If you cannot attend, contact by both Mr. York and Mr. Davis. Every Friday, Mr. Davis a brief summary of your day. At the end of the semester, you and your Parkland Mentee need to develop a brief reflection on your experiences ( to me)

Tying Mentoring into Course work
You may use this time as community service credit. If you are enrolled in either EDU 105, EDU 210, SED 200 or SED 205, you can use this as your observation ( you will receive extra credit) If you complete your mentoring, you will receive a certiicate upon completion

Tutoring Support for Study Skills ( see attached article) Micro-counseling (active listening) Games Crafts

THANK YOU! This is a wonderful opportunity for you to grow as a person and a professional. You will be observing a high quality special education program and learn way beyond the classroom. You will also be a positive influence on the life of a young adult and serving your community.
