Consequences – 1st: Warning
2nd: 20 minute detention
3rd: 40 minute detention
4th: Principal and 40 minute detention

4. Social Studies Curriculum
This course is designed to teach students about some of the earliest empires of our world, starting with Ancient Greece. The Roman Empire will also be explored by students. A survey of African civilizations and the origin of Islam as well as an introduction to the Middle Ages are explored. Students will develop a greater understanding of the world around them in societal terms as well as geographical terms, using the five themes of Geography.

5. Homework
Homework will usually be assigned Monday through Thursday and occasionally on the weekends. Some nights it may consist simply of reading. Hopefully, students are reading everyday.
In addition there may be long-range assignments. Project sheets with expectations, dates, and a grading rubric will be handed out when the project is assigned.
Students may come in early everyday for extra help or to finish something that is incomplete. I am in the room each day at 8:10.
I am not available after school to help students.

6. Evaluation Tests and quizzes
Periodically there will be section quizzes or chapter tests on reading material taught in class. Students will be provided with the necessary information in class to prepare for them, and they will be announced.
Grades are based on the following percentages:
*50%: Classwork including response questions, writing samples, projects, maintenance of SS spiral, and class and participation
*35%: Quizzes and Tests
*15%: Homework and class preparation
**Grade percentages may change throughout the year

7. Report Cards Grades 4-6 report card is on the A-F scale
All assignments have point values and grades are determined by number of points earned out of total points assigned.
Student grades will be available online beginning in September on your Power School account. Information regarding that is being distributed tonight. Students will no longer receive interim reports unless they are failing a class. I encourage you to check Power School from time to time.
Hard copies of report cards will not be distributed. You will access them using your Power School account.
If you do not have a Power School account, or if you did not receive information tonight, contact the main office.

10. Language Arts Curriculum
There are 5 major components to the integrated Language Arts program, which are reading, writing, speaking, listening, and viewing. Through these areas, students will work toward becoming clear and interpretive thinkers and communicators in a supportive community of learners.
Houghton Mifflin “Legacy of Literacy” Language Arts anthology and Reader’s Workshop
Children’s novels such as Hatchet by Gary Paulsen and
The Green Book by Jill Paton Walsh.

Students will be provided with the necessary information in class to prepare for them, and they will be announced. Vocabulary and spelling quizzes may be given alternatively. Vocabulary words and spelling lists are gained from the reading materials.

*60%: Classwork including writing samples, written reading responses, reader’s workshop tasks, reading journal assignments, projects, and class participation
*20%: Quizzes and tests
*20%: Homework, and class preparation
**Grade percentages may change throughout the year

13. Enriched LA in Grade 7 Three requirements
A or A- average in Reading and in Writing in 6th grade*
Score of 120 or higher on the TCS/2 test taken in 5th Grade
Passing score on the middle school assessment given in February/March

14. School Procedures
Absences- Please call to report an absence, and when the child returns send in the required reason for absence.
*If your child is absent, send them in early the following day for makeup assignments. I am in the room each day at 8:05. If they cannot come in early they must come in at recess.
Playground supervision begins at 8:15 each morning. Students should not be arriving before that time unless it is for an activity inside the school.
Emergency Early Dismissal- You must physically come into the building and get your child if you checked, “Wait for pickup by parent or alternate caregiver.”
