Fig. 3 Wound channel comparison.
a) Fully synthetic lung model with gelatine foam blocks placed between 2 solid gelatine blocks. Note the hour-glass shape of the permanent wound channel. The tissue surrounding the permanent wound channel is somewhat more radiopaque (lighter). b) Semisynthetic lung model with an inflated pig lung in gelatine. Here again, the permanent wound channel presents a more or less hour-glass shape with a lighter, i.e. more radiopaque brim. Fig. 5 a) Semisynthetic lung, transverse CT reconstruction of middle portion of the wound channel. Note that the hyperdense ring (highlighted by a white ring) is far larger than the permanent wound channel in the centre. b) Semisynthetic lung, transverse CT reconstruction of the entrance near portion. The hyperdense ring is smaller in relation to the permanent wound channel. Forensic Science International , DOI: ( /j.forsciint ) Copyright © 2017 Elsevier B.V. Terms and Conditions

Fig. 6 Fully synthetic model, transverse CT reconstruction. a) Middle portion, b) entrance portion of the wound channel. There are, besides the permanent wound channel, 4 more zones to be seen: 1. hyperdense inner zone. 2. hypodense second zone. 3. hyperdense outer zone. 4. diffuse corona (intermediate dense outer zone).
