Building Blocks of Power BI
Dashboards Reports Datasets Dashboard: Think of it as a single canvas (made up of tiles) that you can share with others Reports: Power BI report is one or more pages of visualizations (charts and graphs) Datasets: Building blocks of reports

Demo Show dashboard and how to navigate
Data for all Demos is provided by obviEnce and they hold the copy write for the data provided. Use Customer Profitability Sample to show the different kinds of reports you can pin to a dashboard 1. Company Gross Margin % 2. 83 Customers 3. Sell 7 products 4. Most of the revenue comes from North & East Regions

Reports Create from scratch within Power BI
Create from scratch in Power BI Desktop Import from shared dashboards Created for you when you connect to datasets from Excel, Power BI Desktop, databases, and SaaS applications and content packs Can be associated with more than one dashboard Power BI Desktop: Free desktop application that provides Advanced data exploration Shaping Modeling Report creation with highly interactive visualizations Created when connect to.. For example, when you connect to an Excel workbook that contains Power View sheets, Power BI creates a report based on those sheets. And when you connect to an SaaS application, Power BI imports a pre-built report.

Datasets Connect Import Files Services Local WebTrends OneDrive
SharePoint – Team Sites Connect Services WebTrends SalesForce Google Analytics Databases Azure SQL Database Azure SQL Data Warehouse SQL Server Analysis Services (Tabular) Content Pack Datasets are things you either connect to or import Import: Excel CSV Content Packs Created by users w/in your organization Datasets can be used over and over again

Demos Demo Creating Datasets Importing Data Excel .csv
Connecting to service Google Analytics Bing Import Swimming Spreadsheet look at quick insights * Create line chart for finish times Axis | EventDate Legend | EventName Values | TimeInSeconds * Create line chart for split times Axis | EventDate Legend | Lap Values | SplitTime this produces error because no relationships in Excel Show Power BI Desktop for second example import screen very similar to Excel Power Query works without having relationships It’s all jumbled up, so add a slicer to show how to filter Publish to Power BI

Special Tiles Image Text box Video Web content Real-Time Data (Pro)
Formerly known as Widgets The are only available on the Dashboard when click the +Add Tile or if using Power BI Desktop, you cannot add an image in the online service when creating a report. Q & A Question Box Allows you to ask questions about your data in natural language Comes with common synonyms and phrasings Aggregations (less than, maximum, number of, …) Date keywords and ranges (last month, this year, before, after,…) Plurals (opportunity & opportunities) Display verbs (show, is, what is, are, what are) Create your own synonyms and phrasings Aggregations: such as less than, maximum, number of, count of, average, between, before Date keywords: such as last month, this year Date ranges: before, after Display verbs: show, is, what is, are, what are Equality keywords: between, more than, less than, equal Names: If a column in the dataset contains the phrase "name" (e.g., EmployeeName), Q&A understands the values in that column are names and you can ask questions like "which employees are named robert." Plurals: for example, both "opportunity" and "opportunities". Possessives: "what is the total of Jaine's orders" Relationship: datasets have tables and within tables are columns. Most columns will be related to their containing table with a simple phrasing like "hosts have flags" as well as "flags have hosts." These relationships can be described using words such as: have and of. Sort order: descending, ascending, alphabetical order, sort Tenses: for example, both buy" and "bought" Type of visualization: specify the visualization to use, "show sales by year as a clustered bar chart."

Gateway for On-Premises Data
The gateway is supported only on 64-bit Windows operating systems. Download the on-premises data gateway installer from the download menu. If you install the gateway in personal mode, you will not be able to install another gateway on the same machine. Configuring gateway: On-Premises data gateway (pro) Personal Gateway

A query will be created by the cloud service, along with the encrypted credentials for the on-premises data source, and sent to the queue for the gateway to process. The gateway cloud service will analyze the query and will push the request to the Azure Service Bus. The on-premises data gateway polls the Azure Service Bus for pending requests. The gateway gets the query, decrypts the credentials and connects to the data source(s) with those credentials. The gateway sends the query to the data source for execution. 6. The results are sent from the data source, back to the gateway, and then onto the cloud service. The service then uses the results.
