Communication and Connection is Key
Find the balance between being a helicopter and leaving your child on an island
It’s not too soon to start exploring colleges and their requirements
College Visits for 10th graders begin spring semester

PSAT in October as practice for SAT
Consider SAT/ACT Prep class in spring or early Junior Year
Make up credits now, don’t wait until senior year. Only 25% of students who begin 12th grade off track end up graduating on time.

9. HOPE Scholarship Just the basics…
Must have minimum 3.0 in Core Classes Only
Middle School Grades do not Count for HOPE
HOPE subtracts the 7 Honors points we add to Honors/AP/MOWR
Then add 0.5 weight to AP/MOWR classes only (not Honors)
Most Academic Electives Count for HOPE (Speech, AP Psych, Current Issues)
Grades for all attempted academic classes included (even F’s)
HOPE/Zell Rigor Requirement:
Starting with the Class of 2017, students are required to earn 4 credits in courses possessing “academic rigor”
May include but not limited to AP/Honors courses
Examples: Chemistry, Spanish 3, Algebra II

10. Healthy Academic Balance The key to a happy child and a happy home
Pay attention to your child’s workload and commitments inside and outside the classroom.
Find the balance between academic rigor, interesting courses, and time for pizza on Friday night with friends
Students involved in activities or sports are usually better able to balance their commitments because they have to learn to manage time and be responsible.
Pay close attention to your child’s social, emotional, and physical health and consult with professionals as needed.
