Why did the United States refuse when Texas first applied for admission to the Union?
Texas would have entered as a slave state at a time when there was a balance of power in Congress between free states and slave sates. The addition of Texas would have tipped the balance of power in favor of the slave states, which angered Northern free states. Also there was a fear of the expansion of slave territory.
