2 What is a noun? A person A place A thing An idea

3 There are 2 kinds of Nouns
Common Proper

4 What’s the difference? A common noun is general (ex. ice cream)
A proper noun is specific (ex. Ben and Jerry’s Ice Cream) **Also, proper nouns are ALWAYS capitalized. Hint hint.

5 Here are some more examples:
Common Proper school country team river dog Prairie Middle School France the Bear’s Mississippi River Cocker Spaniel

6 Possessive Nouns Some nouns “own” things. These are possessive nouns.
To “possess” means to own. Ex. Lisa’s sweater.

7 Lisa’s sweater Lisa is a proper noun because Lisa is a specific person. Since Lisa owns the sweater (Lisa’s sweater), it is also a possessive noun.

9 You try! Write Noun and Verb Practice at the top of a sheet of clean paper. Number your paper 1-6. Then write the following:

11 Concrete and Abstract Nouns
An Abstract Noun is something you cannot see or touch. It’s an “idea”. EX. LOVE (you can’t really see or touch love) A Concrete Noun is something you can see or touch. EX. Boy (you can see and touch the boy)

Action Verbs Linking Verbs

An action verb is something you can do! Run, Eat, Think, March, Put, Bring, Mix, Study

16 Linking Verbs is, am ,are were, was, be
A linking verb “links” the subject to the predicate. Lisa is nice. Lisa = subject, nice = predicate

17 Example sentences. I am sleepy. I slept all night.
Action Verb Sentences Linking Verb Sentences I am sleepy. The boys were hungry. Those dogs are crazy. I slept all night. The boys ate dinner. Many dogs howl at the moon.

18 Practice, Practice Now we are going to practice writing sentences with nouns and verbs. Remember this formula to help you… SVP (Subject VERB Predicate)

19 Continue to label your paper #s 7-12
Write the following sentences: 7. Write a sentence using a proper noun as a subject. Underline the proper noun. 8. Write a sentence using common noun as a subject. Underline the common noun.

20 More Practice Write a sentence using a possessive proper noun. Underline the possessive proper noun. Use an abstract in a sentence. Underline the abstract noun. Write an sentence using an action verb. Underline the action verb. Write a sentence using a linking verb. Underline the linking verb.
