Bellwork: In your opinion, who are the best scientists in the world and why do think so?

Discussion Question: What are some things or events you have noticed in nature or in your life that make you question them? Ex: How does ___________happen? What causes__________to occur? What are ________made of? Why is_________the way it is? How in the world did______get there? * What have YOU always wondered?
6
What did you do to find the answer to that question?
Discussion Continued What did you do to find the answer to that question? How did you come up with an answer?
7
We look for answers to our biggest questions!
In finding your answer you actually conducted an experiment. Well….That’s Science!!!! That’s exactly what scientists do, and it’s something that most people do everyday. We look for answers to our biggest questions!
8
There is a formula that all scientists everywhere use to find the answers they are looking for.
It is called
9
Can I apply the scientific method?
Standard B.2B - know that hypotheses are tentative and testable statements that must be capable of being supported or not supported by observational evidence. Essential Question Can I apply the scientific method?

Page 02 3-Hole Bottle Lab Essential Question: Hole 1 Hole 1 and 2
All 3 Holes Prediction: Hypothesis: Observation: Diagram: Conclusion - Can I apply the scientific method?

Remember Lab Safety Rules!
1. Dress for Lab: aprons, close toed shoes, pull hair back 2. Personal Protective Equipment: Safety Goggles 3. Chemical Safety: Don’t touch anything, assume all materials are dangerous 4. Dispose of messes properly 5. Proper Lab behavior: no horseplay, no eating or drinking in the Lab.
12
CHAMPs: Lab C: Talk only to your group members about the lab
H: Raise your hand for my help ONLY if EVERYONE in your group is confused A: Work safely on lab at assigned station M: Stand at your assigned lab station. DO NOT leave station with out teacher direction/approval P: Talk with your group about the lab. Always wear safety goggles. Help complete the task. NO heads on desk. DO NOT touch the lab materials until told to do so.
13
Question Our Lab set up includes a 2 liter bottle that has three holes covered by black electrical tape. What do you think will happen if we pull the tape back to uncover just the first hole? In the “Hole 1” column write your prediction. Your prediction does not have to be the same as others in your Lab group.
14
Re-write your prediction in the form of a hypothesis.
If_______, then______, because________
15
Let’s test your hypothesis
When I give the signal you may SLOWLY and CAREFULLY pull the tape back to uncover only the first hole. I will give another signal for you to cover the hole back up. *Try not to squeeze the bottle during this process!
16
Record your observations
In the “Hole 1” column write down what happened in the “observations” section. Try to be as detailed as possible. Write down EXACTLY what you observed.
17
Draw a picture of what you just saw in the “DIAGRAM” section.
In the HOLES 1 column Draw a picture of what you just saw in the “DIAGRAM” section. We will repeat this process for the remaining sections of our Lab Notes. Be sure to listen for my signals.
18
Clean Up The person at the pink seat needs to refill the water bottle
The person at the orange seat needs to make sure the counter is dry (paper towels thrown away and new ones left out) The person at the green seat needs to make sure the aprons are folded The person at the yellow seat needs to make sure the table is clean and the chairs are pushed in
19
Summarize your observations
Write 3 sentences describing if your hypothesis were supported. Explain how you used the scientific method today.
20
Exit Ticket: What would happen if we repeated this process but the bottle was held horizontally with the holes pointing down instead of sitting vertically?
