6 Co-Teaching Vision What co-teaching experiences have you had?
Where are you now with co-teaching? What do you need to know about co-teaching? Where do you want to go with co-teaching in your school? Examine the belief system of the principals about Co-teaching in their schools. What co-teaching experiences have they had before? Where are they now with co-teaching? What do they need to know about co-teaching? Where do they want to go with co-teaching in their school?

7 Foundation Crumblers Read the Foundation Crumblers handout and highlight two concerns for you. Discuss with a shoulder partner what Foundation Crumblers might you have to address in your school. Brainstorm a list of strategies to address this issue. 10 minutes

8 Review the Six Types of Co-teaching
Stations Teaching Parallel Teaching Alternative Teaching Team Teaching One Teach, One Observe One Teach, One Assist Provide the note taking guide for each of the different approaches to co-teaching. Participants must complete the chart with the following information: Types of Approach: Role of AIG Teacher Role of GE Teacher Planning Time needed: How could we use this approach?

9 Station Teaching Is complex but not hierarchical
Consists of several topics Has been previously taught, but students need additional review or practice Provide the handout for Station Teaching…..

10 Parallel Teaching Both groups address the same lesson objectives;
Lesson length will vary depending on what is being taught and learning styles of the students; Pacing of the lesson is critical – Both finish at the same time

11 Alternative Teaching One assumes responsibility for the larger group and other has smaller group Allow teacher to target unique needs of the specific groups by using data This arrangement might take an entire class period or it might take just a few minutes at the beginning or end of a lesson

12 Teaming Teachers plan and deliver instruction together
One teacher might be the primary speaker while second teacher adds information Most complex but satisfying way to co-teach Used only if approach complements the lesson objectives and learning needs

13 One Teach, On Assist Teacher providing assistance must do so in an unobtrusive manner Teacher providing assistance must be able to deliver individual student accommodations and ensure all students are on task. Used with a paraprofessional not a teacher

14 One Teach, One Observe One teacher teaches the students during the lesson. One teacher observes the students while the other one teachers. One teacher takes anecdotal notes of student’s behaviors and student’s academics during the lesson.

Review the Handout for Lesson Planning including plans for both teachers to allow for “parity.” What are your concerns? Best strategies?

18 Co-Teaching Observations
Use the handout for Co-Teaching Observations to discuss the process for observing two teachers deliver the content based on the Co-teaching strategy being used. What are your concerns? Best strategies?

19 How do I support Co-Teaching?
Small group discussion about how to support co-teaching teams within the school building. What is the role of the principal? What is the role of the general educator? What is the role of the AIG, EC or ESL teacher?
