1 Digital identity: reflecting on your online presence
Hidden slides will be reproduced in the workshop handout for students to refer to. Angela Newton Angela Newton 2017

2 Welcome! Why are you here?

3 What do you see? What do you see?
Brainstorm in groups. Big A3 sheets – Blu-tak, stick them up on the wall Angela Newton 2017

4 When you post or share information online, you are leaving behind a set of clues about what kind of person you are. Anyone who looks for you online will pick up some of these clues and start to form ideas about what you are like.

5 Google yourself – use the checklist to assess where you are online
Quick activity – if you’re going to be thorough, it should take a lot longer! Remember to look at image and video results as well as general web documents/pages. Another tip: Make a list of what you expect to find before you search - Angela Newton 2017

6 Tips for assessing your online profile
Is the information about you accurate? Did you make this information available, or has someone else put it online? Do the results about you reflect who you are, or just one or two things about you? Is this information coming from one of your online profiles (e.g. Facebook, Twitter, Instagram etc?) What kind of privacy settings do your online profiles have: public, private or somewhere in between?

7 Curating your online presence

8 Be your own curator Imagine that you are creating a gallery about yourself, and inviting members of the public to view it for free. Consider the following: What would you like to put on display? Do you want any interactive exhibits? (e.g. where people can leave comments) What will you keep in your archive away from the public? One way to take control over what others see about you. Take 10 minutes to think about what you would like to have and where. 3 piles of different coloured post-its – make a collective list as a table. Angela Newton 2017

9 Collect all of your profiles together: About.me
Show Olivia’s example of how About.me works to enable you to bring your links together as a neat showcase for yourself online. Angela Newton 2017
