What is it? A software framework designed for video games to work on consoles and personal computers Usually provide core functionality such as 3D graphic rendering, networking, etc. Responsible for game mechanics Act like a motor engine which allows a game to “go”

Where it all begins Early video games were written as singular entities Game engines were introduced in the early 1990’s First game with game engine; Doom, powered by “Doom Engine” First FPS game introduced in the gaming world

DOOM Known as the first game that “pushes the boundaries in gaming that were not possible before” Graphics were promising during its time period

Present Day After DOOM, for years, game companies began to develop their own game engines for their games; use for other genres Game engines are dramatically improved over time, graphic and tech wise; build on higher level algorithms Modern game engines (next-gen) tend to make games realistic Some games uses the same engine, others are in-build

Example Engines Battlefield franchise – Frostbite Engine- provide realism in gaming Assassins Creed Series- Anvil Engine
