Syn: Legitimate; genuine Ant: The girl was crushed to find that the diamond that she thought was bona fide turned out to be cubic zirconia. Ralph wanted a bona fide New York cheesecake, so he had to travel to Manhattan.

Incidental; chance; fortuitous Ant: Planned; designed The scientist admitted that the breakthrough was an adventitious result of the study. The formation of a pearl is an adventitious effect of oysters trying to expel irritating sand.
