1 Standard Grade Physical Education
Tactics Standard Grade Physical Education

2 What is a Tactic? A game plan or strategy made up before or during a game, which aims to play to your strengths and to attempt to exploit your opponent’s weaknesses and increase your chance of success/ winning. When planning your tactics there are things you should consider (Write these down in your jotter): Your/team strengths Your/team weaknesses Opponents strengths Opponents weaknesses Weather conditions Result required.

3 Tactics used in Activities
Football Offside trap Free kick move Man mark opposition danger man Long ball target man to hold up and lay off ball to attacker. Playing a sweeper system.  Basketball Fast break ½ court defence Man to man defence Zone defence.

4 Structure How you position your players in order to carry out your tactics or game plan. For example: Football- 3-5-2, 3 defenders, 5 midfielders, 2 attackers 4-4-2, 4 defenders, 4 midfielders, 2 attackers 4-3-3, 4 defenders, 3 midfielders, 3 attackers Badminton side by side= defending structure in doubles One front/ one back= attacking structure in doubles. Basketball: 2-1-2 Zone Defence 1-2-2 Zone Defence

5 Adapting Tactics There may be times when you need to change your tactics during a game. For example (write these down in your jotter):, if a player gets sent off or injured the weather conditions do not suit your game plan your team are winning/losing and time is nearly up

6 Task In Basketball, why would you play a 2-1-2 zone defence:
Zone defence restricts space for the opponents close to and around the basket and forces them to shot from outside the key. In Basketball, why would you use full court press: It was late in the game and we were trailing by 1 points, we had to get possession back quickly to score a basket to win the game.

7 BRAIN BUSTER Think about a game of Badminton that you have played and either won, or played well in. Explain in detail, one tactic you used in this game to outwit your opponent. Remember to describe what you did, and what your opponent did. I have a strong overhead clear, so I will use it to push him to the back of the court, then play a drop shot which will catch him out of position due to his poor movement.

8 BRAIN BUSTER Think about a team activity that you have played in. Explain in detail, one tactic that you used in this game that made use of your team’s strengths. Our players at the front of the zone are very fast so we look to play a quick outlet pass and fast break where ever possible against slower opposition.

9 Examples Table tennis- opponent has weak back hand so I played most of my serves to his back hand and this reduced the chances of him attacking me early on in the rally. Football- you play 2 fast wingers against slower full backs. Look to play the ball into the wide areas behind the defenders for fast wingers to run onto and cross/shoot. Athletics 1500m- I have a fast sprint finish so I just tucked in behind the front runner until 200m to go when I sprinted for the line. Basketball- Our players at the front of the zone are very fast so we look to play a quick outlet pass and fast break where ever possible against slower opposition. Hockey- opponents have a fast and skilful right winger so we play our fastest defender out of position at left defence to limit the effectiveness of their quick attacker.
