2. HISTORY
James Naismith was the Canadian physical education instructor who invented basketball in 1891.
James Naismith was born in Almonte, Ontario and educated at McGill University and Presbyterian College in Montreal.
He was the physical education teacher at McGill University (1887 to 1890) and at Springfield College in Springfield, Massachusetts (1890 to 1895). At Springfield College (which was then the Y.M.C.A. training school), James Naismith, under the direction of American physical education specialist Luther Halsey Gulick, invented the indoor sport of basketball.

3. HISTORY The first formal rules were devised in 1892.
Initially, players dribbled a soccer ball up and down a court of unspecified dimensions.
Points were earned by landing the ball in a peach basket.
Iron hoops and a hammock-style basket were introduced in 1893.
Another decade passed, however, before the innovation of open- ended nets put an end to the practice of manually retrieving the ball from the basket each time a goal was scored.
In 1959, James Naismith was inducted into the Basketball Hall of Fame.

5. HOW TO PLAY
There are 2 teams of 5 players each; 2 guards, 2 forwards, and 1 center
Game starts with a jump-ball at midcourt
Regulation games consist of 4- 8 minute quarters, 2-20 minute halves (college), or 4-12 minute quarters (NBA)
A player scores by shooting the ball into their basket; 1 point for free throws, 2 points for floor shots, 3 points for shots beyond the 3 point line
Change of possession every time a team scores
Ball advances by dribbling, passing, or shooting
The game is won by the team with the most points after time has expired

6. BASKETBALL SAFETY
In regulation game of basketball players need to wear athletic shoes and clothing
Players need to be aware of all surroundings making sure to not come in contact with another player
Make sure basketball court is free of debris, for example, any water spills
Practice proper communication, for example, speaking loud enough for teammates to hear offensive or defensive strategies.

14. DEFENSE
The team that does not have possession of the ball; the process used by a team to prevent an opponent from scoring

The team that has possession of the ball; a player or team responsible for scoring in a game

16. REBOUNDING
The act of successfully gaining position after a missed field goal or free throw

17. GUARDING
Keeping an opponent from scoring or receiving the ball from a teammate, also known as, defending or playing defense.

An offensive play where the ball handler passes to a teammate, moves to the basket, receives a quick pass and advances the ball down the court for a shot.

22. FIELD GOAL
A basket scored on any shot other than a free throw, worth two or three points depending on the distance of the attempt from the basket.

23. JUMP STOP
A move where a player jumps into the air and then lands on both feet; the player can then pivot on either foot.

A type of shot, where the player dribbles to the basket and without stopping shoots the ball (right/left/hop/shoot).

25. FREE THROW
A free shot taken from the free throw line as the result of a foul; worth one point if made.

26. PIVOTING
To hold onto the ball and move around, legally, by keeping one foot in the same spot

When a player dribbles the ball with his hand too far to the side of or, sometimes, even under the ball.

34. PERSONAL FOUL
A foul that involves illegal physical contact such as blocking, charging, elbowing or holding.

35. CHARGING
An offensive foul that is committed when a player pushes or runs over a defensive player. The ball is given to the opposing team.

36. BLOCKING
Blocking is illegal personal contact resulting from a defender not establishing position in time to prevent an opponent's drive to the basket.

37. FLAGRANT FOUL
Violent contact with an opponent including hitting, kicking, and punching This type of foul results in free throws for the opponent in addition to them retaining possession of the ball after the free throws.

39. INTENTIONAL FOUL
When a player makes physical contact with another player with no reasonable effort to steal the ball. It is a judgment call for the officials.

40. TECHNICAL FOUL
A foul called against a player or coach for unsportsmanlike conduct such as arguing with a referee.

41. POSTIONS
CENTER
Centers are generally your tallest players. They generally are positioned near the basket.
FORWARD
Normally the second tallest players on the team will most likely be your forwards. These players can be positioned under the hoop and may also play in the wings and corner areas.
GUARD
Normally the shortest and fastest players on the team; these players must be really good at dribbling, seeing the court, and passing the ball. It is their job to bring the ball down the court and set up offensive plays.
