3. History
Ultimate Frisbee first began in 1968 in New Jersey at Columbia High School in Maplewood, NJ
At the time it was known as “Frisbee Football”

4. More History
When it was played at Columbia High School it was run by a group of students from Student Council and the school news paper
The original disk used was a black 150 gram, Wham-O Master Tournament Model
Today the 175 gram Discraft Ultra Star Professional Disc is used

5. Original Rules
Included many parts of American Football. Such as a series of downs, lines of scrimmage and running with the disc
Originally the size of the field was only limited by the goal lines, which were between 40 ad 60 yards apart and parallel.
Refs were originally required

6. Rules that changed
The rules are now more like basketball, soccer, or hockey.
Today the field is 70 yards long, 40 yards across, and the end zones are 25 yards deep.
The players now make their own calls

7. Rules that changed
The old rules said 7 is the preferred number but that the game can be played with as many as 20 or 30 people on each team.
Today the rules say that each team should always have 7 players on each team.

8. Todays Rules: Initiate play/ scoring
Each point begins with both teams lining up on the front of their end zone line. The defense
Pulls the disc to the offense
Each time the offense completes a pass in the defense's end zone, the offense scores a point. Play is initiated
after each score

9. Todays Rules: Movement of the disk
The disc may be advanced in any direction by completing a pass to a teammate. Players may
not run with the disc.
The person with the disc (known as the thrower) has ten seconds to throw the disc. The defender guarding the
thrower (know as the marker) counts out the stall count, up to 10.

10. Todays Rules: Change of Possessions/Substitution
When a pass is not completed (out of bounds, drop, block, interception) the defense
immediately takes possession of the disc and becomes the offense.
Players not in the game may replace players in the game after a score and during an injury timeout

11. Todays Rules: Non-Contact/Fouls
No physical contact is allowed between players. Picks and screens are also prohibited. A foul occurs when
contact is made.
When a player initiates contact on another player a foul occurs. When a foul disrupts possession, the play
resumes as if the possession was retained. If the player committing the foul disagrees with the foul call, the play is redone.

12. Todays Rules: Self-Officiating/Spirit of the game
Players are responsible for their own foul and line calls. Players resolve their own disputes
Ultimate stresses sportsmanship and fair play. Competitive play is encouraged, but never at the
expense of respect between players.
