Reading skills Writing skills Math skills Good grades Study skills Test taking skills Note-taking skills Career knowledge Post-secondary knowledge High school course awareness Goals A plan for the future – Classes and Activities Plan! Elicit some responses from the class then reveal the above to fill in any blanks.

4 Career Guidance Course Outline
We’ll be covering the following Themes: Career and College Development Ownership of Learning Transition Skills Learning Techniques Metacognitive Skills Academic Eligibility Explain that we will be doing lessons and creating products that will be put into their “portfolio” which will follow them through High School graduation.

5 Creating Goals for YOUR 8th Grade year…
What are some goals that 8th graders should have to ensure they are “High School Ready” by the end of the year? Get some ideas then share the following slides.

6 Lesson 8-1 Handout On the Back
5 Academic Goals 5 Activity Goals Have the students create the above chart on the back of Handout Instruct them to fill out 5 Academic and 5 Activity Goals. Next have them rank these 10 Goals 1-5 in order of importance. Flip the Handout over and write them in the appropriate Goal # space provided.

7 Academic Goals Maintain a good Grade Point Average -Be Specific
Take challenging classes Establish a homework routine Learn something OUTSIDE school – Learn for YOURSELF something you are interested in Commit to NO MISSING ASSIGNMENTS Share what you learned with your family daily

8 Social/Physical/Emotional Goals
Surround yourself with GOOD friends – people who build you UP not down Get involved in a school activity or community club Move. Just move. 30 minutes a day if you can! Set and keep a regular bedtime Learn to manage your time better

9 School Activities / Goals
SADD Club Intramurals Board Games, Sign Language, Book Fair, etc. Sports Basketball Volleyball Track Cross Country Student Leadership ASB Student Government Leadership Class Renaissance Advisory Yearbook T-Wolf News Band Choir Drama Washington DC Trip Legislative Page at the State Capitol Community Organizations Youth Group 4-H Scouts Sports (ie: Shelton Football)

10 Some more random goals…
Write a book or a script Film a documentary Learn a coding language Enter an art competition Learn basic car repair skills Learn a new language Embark on a research project at a local college or university Get an internship Create something new (yes, this is purposefully vague) Read through an entire encyclopedia Start a blog or a website Start a charity Learn how to play a musical instrument Ace the SAT or the ACT or both Grow a garden Write a song Get paid to do something you love Volunteer for a cause you support

12 Lesson 8-1 Handout On the Front
List five (5) Academic/Activity Goals that you think you could achieve this school year Have the students fill out the front of their “My Goals for ”. Encourage them to make goals that are realistic and that they will indeed work toward. Remind them this will be a part of their Student Portfolio and others may read it.

13 Lesson 8-1 Journal Page Where did I come from and Where Will I Go?
When you get to the end of 8th grade and you look back on your year, what do you hope will be your greatest accomplishment? What must you do to make that happen? What do you think your greatest challenge will be in 8th grade and what are you planning to do to overcome it? Inform students journal pages will be kept in their portfolios. They become an interesting “time capsule” of their changing thoughts and feelings over the next few years. They should also know that you AND future teachers will be reading these journals to help guide them in the future.
