In 1853 argentina became a republic after adopting a constitution In 1947 juan peron elected president and in 1974 died. In 1976 Isabel peron was deposed by a military coup and exiled

La Guerra Sucia (The Dirty War)
Period of state terrorism from 1974 to 1983. Period that included “los desaparecidos” where 10,000 people were captured and killed by state militant groups

Mothers of the Plaza de Mayo
After the Dirty War era, many mothers with disappeared children protested in front of the Argentine government building to demand answers about how and where their children disappeared too.

Grandmothers of the Plaza de Mayo
Founded in 1977 Human rights organization with the goal of finding illegally adopted and stolen children from the Dirty War era in Argentina.

Reflection Do you think that events in the past should be forgotten if recalling them might create conflict? Or, are there reasons why the past should be remembered and dealt with, no matter how painful? Would you speak about an issue that could cause you to “disappear”? What do you think motivated these women to risk their lives to speak about this issue? Would you do the same?
