2 Informed, responsible decisions about health and safety: HIV and AIDS
AIDS stands for: Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome and is caused by HIV (Human Immunodeficiency Virus).

3 The HI-virus to aids When the virus enters the body, it attacks the T-cells. The T-cells are a part of the immune system that helps fight the body from diseases and infections. After a while the HIV destroys many of the T- cells that the body needs to protect you from infections. Once an infection has entered the body, it is known as aids.

4 The spread of HIV HIV is transmitted and spread through bodily fluids such as blood and semen. Mothers who have HIV,can transmit the virus to their babies during birth or when breastfeeding. Use or sharing of needles can lead to the spread of HIV.

5 How do you know? A blood test is the only way to find out if you have HIV There is no cure for HIV and aids

6 Control of medications, diet, healthy lifestyle and positive attitude

7 An HIV - positive person can have a healthy, normal life by:
Looking after your body Positive thinking Support of people around you Eat right Exercise Get plenty of rest

8 Looking after your body:
You need to avoid risky situations that can lead to poor behaviour which can lead to the spread of HIV. Drugs and alcohol are the main causes of the spread of HIV because people behave irresponsibly. ARV (antiretroviral) treatment helps to prevent the weakening of the body's immune system and should be taken daily.

9 Positive thinking: When you stay positive, you can improve your life and feel much better. Believe in yourself and decide on your future goals

10 Support of people around you:
Feelings of depression can be prevented by having confidence in your family members and friends. They can even work with you in your support group or join your counselling sessions.

11 Eat right: A healthy diet ensures a healthy body! Your body fight disease if you have enough fruits and vegetables. Eat whole grain products. Drink plenty of water. Avoid fatty, sugary junk food.

12 Exercise: Improves your body and is good for your mind. Reduce the feelings of anxiety and depression

13 Get enough rest: Important for your wellbeing and stamina.

14 ACTIVITY- What will you do?
How do you think Mark felt when he heard the news? How would you feel if you were in his position, Imagine a scene where you are a health worker who supports and gives advice to a patient who has just discovered that he or she is HIV-positive. Create a pamphlet for HIV and AIDS awareness campaign in your community. Includes facts about HIV and AIDS and how you can manage HIV
