The Call.
You’ve just answered your phone, the phone call just originated from your bank, the banker tells you, there has been fraudulent activity on your account, that someone has charged $ under your account in Chicago. You are now under stress, you say you didn’t make those charges, the bank understands and they will reverse the charge, but needs to confirm the last 4 of your SSN. You COMPLY.

What happened.
-Caller ID originated from the bank, it showed up on your phone even if you had the bank’s number programmed into your phone or office phone. -The Caller wasn’t the bank. This is fraud. -You just provided your SSN or perhaps your business information to them such as EIN Number with other identifying information.

How?
-By Using Voice over Internet Protocol or PRI, a CALLERID number has been fraudulently used to call your phone. -The Research or Due Diligence – The caller found information on you through means of trash, facebook, , google search,etc, and has created a profile on you or your business. -They have created profile on the bank used to call you. Maybe they know something about your banking and the bank’s processes. -They used social engineering to trick you into providing information they need.

Why?
- By obtaining crucial information about you, such as the last 4 of your SSN, they can bi-pass security to get additional information about your assets. Will not go further into discussion. -They will use this for financial gain, perhaps selling your information, adding additional services to your plans, such as your phone, modifying your accounts, and/or using it to steal additional information from other accounts granted you have access to such. -They have nothing better to do but to make your life miserable.

How to Prevent
CHALLENGE YOUR CALLER ALWAYS. Your bank is calling you, ask them to verify you! Call the number back directly, if there is some importance to the call and asking for specific information about you. Lock your Cell phone with a PIN to access your voice mail. This is a new form of SPAM, not Telephone marketing, but sophisticated communications which involved social engineering.
