2 Hocus Pocus! What’s our focus?
Our focus today is to learn about different genres under fiction and nonfiction and identify books in each genre.

3 Reading Genres What is a genre?
A genre is a type of text or story. It can be identified by different characteristics that are in the story.

4 Books are divided into two main categories:
Fiction and Nonfiction

5 Fiction A made up story Can tell about things that could happen
Is read for fun Characters may be like real people or imaginary

6 Nonfiction It has facts that can be checked and proven.
The author knows all about this information. It is read to gain information on a subject. It is TRUE!

7 These are called GENRES!
Books are put into groups based on what they have in common: These are called GENRES!

14 Genre #1 Stories that are told again and again. Sometimes the story changes. This genre includes folktales, legends, fables, fairy tales, tall tales, and myths from different cultures.
