1 Las fábulas

2   What are fables? A fable is a succinct (short) fictional story that features animals, mythical creatures, plants, inanimate objects or forces of nature which are anthropomorphized (given human qualities such as talking), and that illustrates or leads to an interpretation of a moral lesson (a "moral"). Fables are generally used with children to give them morals and teach them right from wrong. EXAMPLES:

3 Reading Comprehension Strategies
Pay attention to fonts & titles Pay attention to graphics and pictures. Start by reading the questions first, so that you know what keywords to look for. Get the basic idea of the text, don't worry about every little detail. Consider the context of the text. (IE is it a news article? a story?)

4 More… Look for cognates! Don't try to translate everything literally.
Use your knowledge of grammar. Highlight keywords you know. Draw it out to remember. Create a glossary

5 Un Glosario For the next few weeks (starting today) you will be creating “un glosario”. In your glossary, create a heading for each of the stories that we read. Ex: La Ratita Presumida Under the heading, list any words that you learn (new vocabulary) from that reading. You should include at least 10 and no more than 15. Focus on words that are essential to comprehension. Sra. Walters will check these after each reading is due.

6 Las Entradas del Glosario
Group 1 – Write the word and define the word in Spanish and an example sentence using the word. Group 2 – Write the word, English translation, and an example sentence using the word.

7 La Ratita Presumida Look at the title and pictures and predict the story. Read over the questions on the back page. 3. Highlight or underline all cognates and words on the vocabulary list. 4. Read the entire paragraph. At the end ask yourself, “Do I understand what happened in this paragraph?” (The who, what, when, where, why) 5. If so, move on, if not look up the verbs and subjects you need to understand and add them to your glossary.
