Censorship- Restricting access to ideas & information Government & church officials tried to protect the old order from the ideas of the Enlightenment Banned & burned books; imprisoned writers Philosophes & writers would disguise their ideas in fiction

Salons Salons- Informal social gatherings at which writers, artists & philosophes exchanged ideas Discussed new literature, arts, science & philosophy Middle-class women hosted Middle-class citizens met w/ nobility on an equal footing to discuss & spread Enlightenment ideas

Enlightened Despots Enlightened Despots- Absolute rulers who used their power to bring about political & social change Frederick the Great- Tight control over his subjects but He tolerated religious differences Reforms in Prussia aimed at making his government more efficient

Paintings were huge, colorful & full of excitement Glorified historic battles or the lives of saints Rococo- Style of art that was personal, elegant & charming Furniture had delicate flowers, charming settings

Music & Literature Music Literature Operas performed at royal courts
Johann Sebastian Bach- wrote complex & beautiful religious works for organ & choir Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart- Composer & performer. Brilliant operas, graceful symphonies: defined a new style of music. Died at the age of only 35. Literature Middle-class readers enjoyed stories about their own times Outpouring of novels Robinson Crusoe was written at this time
