3. Long-Term Catheters
More than 12 per year - consider changing to medium term catheters.
Prescribe 2 initially, but only 1 to be added to repeats.
All Silicone Long-term Catheters - Licensed for urethral and suprapubic use. Advised 1st-line in people with latex allergies.
Open-ended Catheters - Licensed for long-term use and available as an alternative to patients experiencing problems of sediment blockage and urinary infection.
NO PRE-FILLED SYRINGE AVAILABLE.

4. Please order quantity needed as SINGLE units
Catheter Valves - Change catheter valves every 5-7 days. No more than 1 packet (5) per month.
Not to be used following radical surgery (bladder / prostate)
for at least 8 weeks
Belly Bags - Suitable for wheelchair dependant patients. Can be left in situ for up to 28 days.
Catheter Maintenance solutions, Short-term use only. Order 2 x30ml for Uro-tainer Twin solutions
CATH-IT Insertion/Removal Pack – formulary choice.

5. Urinals/Directors - Patients require assessment for appropriateness of using urinals, due to factors including hand dexterity, eye sight and co-ordination.
Speak to your local continence team for further advice.

6. Please order in MULTIPLES of box sizes
Sterile Leg Bags – For the collection of urine from indwelling catheters or sheaths. Straps are included in each pack. Bags may stay in place for 5-7 days.
No more than 1 box of 10 should be issued alternate months
(6 x 10 per year)
Non-Drainage night bags Suitable for all patients unless “bed bound” where a drainable bag may be used.
No more than 3 boxes should be issued every month
(3 x 10 / month)

7. Drainable night bags (bedbound patients) Suitable for single patient use. Bags can stay in place for 5-7 days.
Leg bag holders / support Used as an alternative to leg straps to secure a leg urine drainage bag to leg. These products are washable and 1 pack should last 6 months.
No more than 2 packets should be issued every year.
Should not be on Repeat.
Urinary Sheaths – Synthetic – Standard Length - Generally 1 packet of 30 should be adequate for 1 month

8. Remember….. Always refer to the Continence formulary
Never issue retrospective FP10s to DACs
Refer patients with complex needs to the Southern Health Continence team for review.
