Workbook pg. 136 Transcendentalism- an intellectual movement of the mid 1800s that emphasized the individual and living a simple life. Led by Ralph Waldo Emerson They wanted to transcend- or go beyond- the limitations of the senses and everyday experiences.

Reading Skill: Identifying Theme
A theme is the underlying message or the central idea of a work, which can be stated in one sentence. Writers usually do not state the theme directly. To identify the theme of a work, readers must make inferences based on clues in the text.
