Synthesis essay
12
What does the quotation imply?
How does this relate to synthesis?
13
AP Language and the Synthesis essay
Reading Pd.: 15 mins. Essay writing: 40 mins.
14
AP College Board Definition of synthesis: combining a variety of sources (min. of three) into a coherent, well-written essay supporting your position. Your argument should be “central”; the sources selected should support this argument!
15
The prompt asks you to take a position that defends, challenges, or qualifies the claim.
Usually six sources follow the prompt; use three to support your position. Provide citations from sources to support your position.
16
Defend the claim? Challenge the claim? Qualify the claim?
17
Your Thesis Statement will provide an overview of the topic and your position
Then, you will use the three sources to support your position Either refer to the sources by their titles (Source A, Source B, etc.) OR by the description in parentheses (Author’s name) or (Chart), etc. See examples ...
18
Source A (Campbell) source b (Hart and Triece) Source c (Menand) source d (Chart) source e (Ranney) source F (Koppel)
19
(Previously released Exam) Exs
(Previously released Exam) Exs. for citing sources Source B (Hart and Triece) Source B stated that, “because of television’s sense of intimacy, the American people feel they know their presidents as persons and hence no longer feel the need for party guidance”. OR, Hart and Triece stated that, “ ...” OR ... “Because of television’s sense of intimacy, The american people feel they know their presidents as persons and hence no longer feel the need for party guidance” (Source B). Sample Synthesis question 2008 AP Exam
Television has been influential in U.S. presidential elections since the 1960s. But just what is this influence, and how has it effected who is elected? Has it made elections fairer and more accessible, or has it moved candidates from pursuing issues to pursuing image? What is your initial reaction to the above statements/questions??
21
AP Prompt: Read the following sources carefully
AP Prompt: Read the following sources carefully. Then, in an essay that synthesizes at least three of the sources for support, take a position that defends, challenges, or qualifies the claim that television has had a positive impact on presidential elections. Would you look for sources that defend this claim (agree), challenge (disagree), or qualify (agree in part and disagree in part)?
22
Sources During the 15 minute reading period, examine each source and whether the source agrees/disagrees/challenges your position During your planning, think about whether you could use this source effectively to Support your argument annotate, annotate!! Meaning ?????
23
Sources... Keep in mind that your argument is central to the essay
Sources are used to SUPPORT your argument!
24
Structure of Essay !! Let’s review …
You will begin essay with a brief ______ and __________. Next, you will defend, challenge, or qualify your argument with ___ (# of sources) that __________ your ____________, remembering that your argument is the _________ idea of essay. Identify each source by __________ or ___________. Finally? Conclude essay with a strong _______ statement uniquely reiterating ________ idea.
25
Structuring the Synthesis Essay...
When you synthesize ... remember you are putting the parts together to form a whole ... Thus, isolating one source per paragraph is not bringing parts “together”! Combine ideas from sources.
26
When synthesizing the sources, think of the seasons merging together in the mosaic ... blend the sources in paragraphs to combine collectively the ideas that support what is CENTRAL to your argument! Keep in mind: voice, diction, syntax, rhetorical strategies that you utilize in composing your response!
