Read intro to Ralph Waldo Emerson and his essay, “Self-Reliance” pp and pp Tone activity/questions 1-9 on page 202

4 Tone: A writer’s attitude towards his or her subject

5 Non-conformist: A person who does not conform to a generally accepted pattern of thought or action; someone who likes to rebel and be different and live by his or her own rules

6 Journal: Who do you consider to be a non-conformist? This can be someone living or dead, someone you know or someone in the public eye. Explain.
