1 National Boating Safety Hands-On “ON-WATER” Education
Advisory Council Hands-On “ON-WATER” Education November 1, 2009

2 “On-Water Education” NASBLA’s Education and Awareness Committee approved /adopted the following definitions; Advanced Education as any course of instruction that goes beyond a basic boating safety course that is NASBLA approved and recognized by the Coast Guard. On‐Water Education defined as any course of instruction that is boat based for skills development, regardless of the level of the course content.

3 “On-Water Education” NASBLA’s Education & Awareness Committee developed “Best Practices” in cooperation with; U.S. Sailing BoatUS Foundation USCG Auxiliary U.S. Power Squadrons Tow Boat Foundation

4 “On-Water Education” Basic curriculum components identified were;
Boats and Basic Boating Knowledge Basic Maintenance Preparation, Onboard Briefing and Familiarization of Boat and Equipment Seamanship Navigation

5 “On-Water Education” On The Water Maneuvers and Skill Demonstration (i.e): getting underway come to full stop maintaining bow straight using reverse bring boat to a mooring buoy and retrieve lines maneuver boat to a position alongside of and parallel to a dock/pier anchoring and retrieving anchor perform various maneuvers in wind and current conditions

6 “On-Water Education” Two non-profit grants to develop on-water training modules; National Safe Boating Council focusing on “Close-Quarters” Boat Handling U.S. Power Squadrons focusing on developing and instituting the basic components of the NASBLA Best Practices skills
