2 The word volcano is comes from Vulcan, the god of fire in Roman mythology. A volcano is a mountain that opens down to a pool of molten rock below the surface of the earth. When pressure builds up, eruptions is happening. Gases and rock shoot up through the opening and fill the air with lava fragments.

3 Eruptions can cause blasts, lava flows, hot ash flows, avalanches, falling ash and floods. Volcano eruptions have been known to knock down entire forests. An erupting volcano can bring tsunamis, flash floods, earthquakes and rockfalls.

4 Why do volcanoes erupt? The Earth's crust is made up of huge slabs called plates, which fit together like a puzzle. These plates sometimes move. The friction causes earthquakes and volcanic eruptions near the edges of the plates.

5 There are more than 1500 active volcanoes on the Earth and we know of about 80 or more which are under the oceans. The most famous volcano in GREECE is Santorini volcano, that its biggest eruption, years ago, destroyed the Minoan civilization.
