21 Four-year COLLEGE

22 BASIC GUIDELINES FOR YOU!
MHS PARENT NIGHT PAVING THE ROAD TO COLLEGE SEPT. 6PM IN PAC SENIOR SESSION

23 Guidelines for applying to a 4-year college
Apply to Multiple Campuses. Give yourself options. Find the “Right Fit.” Location, size, majors, sports, cost, atmosphere Know Chances for Admission Review profile for last years accepted Freshmen (average GPA/Test Score/Acceptance Rate) Low acceptance rate = Selective/Competitive admissions High acceptance rate = Less competitive admissions Do your RESEARCH VERY important!

24 Reach - target - safety GPA and test score averages for previous year’s freshmen are ABOVE yours. Admission rate may make the probability of acceptance more of a gamble. Top Tier Schools - Will highly selective college spark your competitive side or overwhelm you?

25 REACH-TARGET-SAFETY Your grades and test scores MATCH the average for previous year’s freshmen students admitted. Increases the chances that the student will be admitted. No guarantees, but it is not unreasonable to think you’ll be accepted to some of your target schools.

26 Reach - target - safety Your GPA and test scores are ABOVE the average for previous year's freshmen students admitted. Admission rate indicates high probability of admission. Apply to at least 1 or 2 Safety Schools. Some students use a Community College as their Safety School.

27 college campus visits & interviews
Plan ahead to interview with an admission officer if possible Prepare questions you would not find in a catalog. Take a guided tour. Sit in a class if possible Think about the educational approach. Is it a match? Demonstrate interest: Colleges keep track of student interest. Attend College Representative meetings in the fall .

40 PRIVATE & OUT OF STATE SCHOOLS
Today at lunch: Out of State College Fair PRIVATE & OUT OF STATE SCHOOLS

41 Private/out of state college guidelines
Admission requirements vary by institution. Many use A-G criteria. Some require additional Math & Science. Check admissions tests required. Most use “committee” type process & comprehensive review. Most count ALL high school grades, including Fall of Senior year. For highly selective colleges – Strong admissions test scores, rigorous academic load, & many of the factors used in UC Comprehensive Review. Usually high tuition for Non-Residents. Explore WUE (Western Undergraduate Exchange)- wiche.edu/wue IMPORTANT Use Naviance to check individual campuses admission requirements, testing requirements & deadlines because they vary greatly! Early Decision – binding, early notification Early Action – non-binding, early notification Regular – will consider later testing and fall senior grades Rolling – notified weeks after applying Most count all high school grades including fall 12th

42 Out of state college tuition - WUE
Discounted tuition at participating out of state colleges. Each college has own eligibility requirements and application process.

43 Early Decision vs. Early Action
Apply early. Receive admission decision early. Consider acceptance offer; do not have to commit Apply to other colleges under regular admission plans. Give decision no later than the May 1 national response date. Early Decision Apply early to first-choice college. Receive an admission decision earlier than usual notification date (usually by December). Agree to attend if accepted & offered financial aid package considered adequate by family. Apply to only one college early decision. Apply to other colleges under regular admission plans. Withdraw all other applications if accepted by Early Decision campus. Send a nonrefundable deposit before May 1.
