Exxon Valdez Oil Spill

When and How? On March 24th 1989 an oil tanker by the name of Exxon Valdez crashed into a reef just off of Prince William Sound at around 12:04 am and tore open the hull releasing 11 million gallons of crude oil.

Why did it happen? On march 24th 1989 the 987 foot long oil tanker by the name of Exxon Valdez crashed into Bligh reef because the pilot was drunk. This happened 1300 miles off the coast line of Prince William sound.

How was it Cleaned? There were 3 efforts to clean the Exxon Valdez oil spill Burning Mechanical cleanup Chemical dispersants They started with the burning method with fire resistant boom’s and the decided that they should try to use skimmers which was a mechanical cleanup the changed to chemical dispersants which ended up being the most effective of the 3.

Economic Effects Exxon Valdez spent $40,000-90,000 on otter health care, $20,000 on harbour seal heath care $22,000 to eagle health care, $25,000 to sea birds and $218.6 million to 4 other species. Herring, crab, shrimp, salmon, rockfish and sablefish Fisheries closed because they ran out of these fish to catch.

Environmental effects
When the Exxon Valdez oil tanker crashed it ended up killing 250,000 seabirds, 2,800 sea otters, 300 harbor seals, 250 bald eagles 22 killer whales and billions of salmon and herring eggs.
