What is Expository Writing?
Writing used to: Explain Describe Give Information **The creator of an expository text CANNOT assume that the reader has prior knowledge of the topic.**

Things to keep in mind when writing:
Strong organization of information is important – use a graphic organizer! Each paragraph brings the reader deeper into the subject by providing new information. An expository essay has a specific formula as to what should appear in each paragraph.

1st Paragraph (Introduction)
Begins with a good hook (attention grabber)to draw your reader in. States the topic. Provides a preview of the three body paragraphs. Concludes with a transition sentence that leads into the next paragraph.

1st Paragraph (Introduction)
Types of Attention Grabbers… Question – Why do kids have to go to bed so early on school nights. Statistic – 54% of students would rather start school later. Shocking Statement – Mrs. Brooks has an identical twin sister! Strong Opinion – Pink is the best singer to ever live! Quote – “Now watch me whip. Now watch me nae nea.”

2nd, 3rd, 4th Paragraphs (Body)
Each paragraph has its own topic related to the main idea. Use details and examples to explain and expand each paragraph – do not repeat yourself. Each paragraph needs a topic sentence. Let’s the reader know what the paragraph is about.

5th Paragraph (Closing)
Restate your topic from the introduction, but in DIFFERENT WORDS. Summarize the 2nd, 3rd, and 4th paragraphs. End with a “zinger” (closure sentence) that makes the reader think or smile.

Types of closure/zinger sentences… Advice for the reader – Something they should learn or do after reading your paper. Question – Give the reader something to think about. Your Feelings – tell the reader how you feel about the topic. Reword – Reword your attention grabber. Quote – Use a quote that has to do with your topic.

YOUR ASSIGNMENT… You will create a 5 paragraph expository paper.
In your paragraph you will create an introduction paragraph, 3 body paragraphs, and a conclusion paragraph. The topic of your paper will be to research a dead poet or singer and give facts about his/her life – childhood, adulthood, and a poem/song for which the author/singer is famous and what it means. You will need to include text evidence for the meaning. Everyone will do a DIFFERENT poet/singer.

PARAGRAPH DETAILS… Your paper should contain 5 paragraphs in the following order… INTRO 1st paragraph –includes sentence to draw reader in and gives main points of paper. BODY 2nd – 4th paragraphs – explaining childhood, adulthood, and poem/song. Text evidence should be used to explain meaning of poem/song. CONCLUSION 5th paragraph – restates info and uses closure sentence.

Rubric… FCA 1: Intro paragraph (attention grabber and facts clearly stated) Highlight the attention grabber. ½ pt FCA 2: Body paragraphs are clearly written with required info and text evidence is underlined in 4th paragraph. 3 pts FCA 3: Conclusion paragraph used one of the methods we talked about. Highlight the zinger sentence. ½ pt
