What is a norm? bridge A norm is a bridge
Between guiding principles (habits) & rules

Norms are the “how”
4
Advantages Reduce conflict and stress
Enable team members to hold each other accountable Supports Early resolution of issues Makes it easier for team members to focus on goals
5
Steps: In small groups-brainstorm potential problems Agree to top 10 Do affinity diagram Power vote Choose top 5 ….. then brainstorm opposite of problem (example if problem is too many disruptions, then word it so that norm explains how to make a calm respectful space? Make sure norms are written down, that each team member signs off and that norms are posted prominently.
6
Norm example Instead of “No disruptions” …….say
Everyone deserves to learn without disruptions.
7
Now you design your own classroom norms:
8
1) Think about an ideal classroom- what does it look like?
9
What do we need from one another to be successful?
Students from teachers? Teachers from students? Students from students?
10
How do I want to be treated?
How should I treat others?
11
How can I accelerate my learning?
12
How will I be sure that I can always answer these questions?
What am I learning and why is it important? How do I know that I have learned something? What do I do when I get stuck? What do I do when I am finished?
13
Now- -move into your small group -decide on a group leader who will keep discussion moving -decide on a scribe- to write thoughts down -decide on a presenter to explain group thoughts to whole class Ready….. Set……. Go……………………..
