This project involved choosing a material & manufacturing technique for a faucet stem, an internal part in a faucet. Selecting faucets do not stop at warranties but include finishes and shapes. Several shapes are available on the market to add character to the bathroom. This allows customers to add their own touch and flavor which is very good for the faucet industry. Also available are the choices of finishing coatings, which include paint colors, chrome finishing and corrosive coatings. Depending on the type of finishing the cleaning capabilities can be enhanced or hindered.

Eschmann states that is the most frequently used material in the US for bearings. He also goes on to say that chemical composition and static strength alone cannot judge the suitability of a material for a bearings high cyclic stressing. Grain structure, homogeneity, residual stress microscopic, and macroscopic cleanliness must also be taken into account. Figure 1 below shows a micrograph of steel. Its small grain structure and microscopic cleanliness can be seen in this picture. Figure 2 is a micrograph of 440C stainless steel. It can be seen from this micrograph that 440C does not have as tight of a structure as

When concrete changes from the plastic stage to solid state cement molecules bond together. When water is added to the concrete mixture, cement molecules begin to grow micro fingers. These micro fingers continue to grow until they encounter another cement molecule fingers. This is where the bonding action occurs and the concrete hardens. This creates a porous material. The porosity is formed when the cement molecules are bonded together, and water is trapped between the cement molecules. The porosity is what allows the saltwater to enter the concrete. The water will travel through the concrete to the rebar. Once the water reaches the rebar the chlorides ions within the saltwater start to corrode the rebar.
