Rooting v. Unlocking Rooting = superuser/admin permissions, you can change the OS. Unlocking (your bootloader) lets you install custom ROMs, replacing your OS (normally stored in Read-Only Memory). Bootloader: Android contains several partitions, one with system files and another with your accumulating app data. This is like a security checkpoint for all those partitions, ensuring your software is genuine and telling your phone where to look to get running.

Find a YouTube video/tutorial that shows how to work with your device. In it they’ll give you links to a few things you need to get: Android SDK (Recovery software: TWRP) Custom Google Apps (OpenGAapps pico) BETA-SuperSU (allows for advanced management of Superuser rights for all your apps that need root access ) Possibly Custom ROM (eg: CyanogenMod, Paranoid Android: get “latest release”, not “nightly”)

Now you’re ready Make sure your laptop and cellphone are fully charged, and that you have a cable to connect the two. Read over all the instructions very carefully before you proceed; download everything and prepare it in advance. Don’t do it before anything important; I usually gear up anticipating a few-day campout by my phone (Christmas!)
