Summary Report Project Name: Voluntary Universal Healthcare Identifiers Brief Project Description: The VUHID project supplies globally unique healthcare IDs to enable error-free patient identification and enhanced privacy management of clinical data. Major milestones to date: RWJF clinical pilot project deployment grant, 2011, Production system, Q3, 2011 Projected milestones: First HIE operational Q1, 2012 Major release dates: NA Contribution date: Currently available for integration Contribution value: 20 person years The Voluntary Universal Healthcare Identifier (VUHID, pronounced “view hid”) project represents 25 years of development work and is based on two ASTM International standards. The project aims to facilitate healthcare information exchange and “meaningful use” by making available unique healthcare identifiers that can be used to enable error-free patient identification and enhanced privacy management of clinical information that operates across clinical, geographic, and operational boundaries. The basic VUHID server has been available since We are actively seeking health information exchange beta test sites to help demonstrate the value and benefits that the system provides.

We are currently in discussions with other major healthcare stakeholders considering patient identification projects that may serve multiple types of healthcare organizations. Taken together these projects, if successful, will mean the VUHID system will have a firmly established clinical operational base by the end of 2012. 12 Month Rolling Plan Major Dates and Deliverables Q1, 2012 1Q13 Deployment to other healthcare organizations 4Q12 Deployment to additional HIEs Initial HIE value analysis available Deployment of additional pilot sites 3Q12 Global Patient Identifiers Inc. is in dialog with several agencies to develop pilot deployments of VUHID identifiers in clinical situations. These have the potential to lead to multiple clinical deployments during The VUHID production server system has been upgraded to a failure-resistant configuration with full disaster-tolerant operation anticipated during We also hope to engage the healthcare privacy community in an active dialog with the goal of garnering increasing support by that community for the ability to enhance the privacy capabilities of the Nationwide Health Information Network.
