The Voluntary Universal Healthcare Identifier (VUHID, pronounced “view hid”) project represents 25 years of development work and is based on two ASTM International standards. The project aims to facilitate healthcare information exchange and “meaningful use” by making available unique healthcare identifiers that can be used to enable error-free patient identification and enhanced privacy management of clinical information that operates across clinical, geographic, and operational boundaries. GPII, in conjunction with the Western Health Information Network (WHIN) has received a one year grant from the Robert Wood Johnson Pioneer Foundation. We are currently in discussions with other major healthcare stakeholders considering patient identification projects that may serve multiple types of healthcare organizations. Taken together these projects, if successful, will mean the VUHID system will have a firmly established clinical operational base by the end of 2012.
