There are a number of rules or ‘laws’. Throughout the badminton unit of work you will learn a number of these laws. This section will cover some of them. The statements below refer to the smash technique. The smash has been broken down into the teaching point but the order has been jumbled up. LEVEL 3 LEVEL 4 LEVEL 5 LEVEL 6 I can play at least two recognised shots and put them into a half court match. I know the rules of a half court match. I can serve to start a game and play three recognised shots to a good standard. I can referee a half court game. I have a wide selection of shots available to me and can put them into a game in both singles and doubles. I can discuss basic tactics and serve to start a game. I can vary the type of serve in a game. I can perform all shots to a good standard, using tactical knowledge to beat my opponent. I can help with the refereeing of a full game. LEVEL 7 LEVEL 8 EXCEPTIONAL PERF I have a very good range of shots that are all highly perfected and used appropriately. I can play in doubles and singles games. I can discuss the strengths and weaknesses of an opponent. I play for a club in or out of school. My shots are of a very high standard and are used appropriately in a game. I can use my knowledge of tactics and shots to give myself an advantage (especially the serve). I can help less able players develop and can referee a full game. I can fulfil all the criteria for level 8. My shots are of an exceptional standard. My game is easily adaptable to suit my opponents’ weaknesses. I unconsciously switch from attack to defence positions in doubles. I can fully referee a game.
