Clauses and Phrases If you are at this station, clauses and phrases were part of your most missed. The following activity, will help you master this skill.

Clause: a group of words that contains a verb and its subject.
Do not rush through these definitions and examples. Take notes in you RL comp. book

Ex. My mother drove me to school.
My mother drove me to school, but my brother rode his bicycle. Independent Clause: expresses a complete thought and can stand by itself as a sentence.

You might see these words at the beginning of a dependent clause.
That Which Who Whom Whose After Although As As if As long as As much as As soon as As though Because Before How If While Wherever where In order that Since So that Than Though Unless Until When Whenever Ex. It the dress is too long, I will have to hem it. The new food that the veterinarian recommended is good for our hamster. Dependent/Subordinate Clause: does not express a complete thought and cannot stand by itself as a complete sentence.

Phrase: a group of related words that is used as a single part of speech and that does not contain both a verb and its subject

Prepositions In On Under For Next Among Between Beside Near Into of Ex. I was walking under the umbrella. Next to them, my brother is eating. Prepositional phrases: includes a preposition, the object of a preposition, and any modifiers of that object.

Ex. To succeed is my goal. She tried to win
infinitive PHrases: a verb form that can be used as a noun, an adjective, or an adverb. They start with to.
