1 Proposed Activity: Annual Report on the State of the Arctic J. Richter-Menge, CRREL; J. Overland, PMEL, NOAA; A. Proshutinsky, WHOI An annual, peer-reviewed consensus report and conclusion summary, which highlights major changes in the Arctic that are of particular interest to the greater climate change community.

2 THE CONCEPT A balanced evaluation of the state of the Arctic based on observations and model results Consensus-based scientific review relying on credible sources Integrated pan-Arctic report including analyses of atmospheric, sea ice, ocean and terrestrial conditions: Atmospheric circulation, pressure, and temperature Sea ice concentration, drift, thickness, and mass balance Ocean circulation, freshwater and heat content, thermohaline structure, transport through gateways, sea level Terrestrial indicators: vegetation, snow cover, permafrost, river runoff Biological activity from primary productivity and vegetation to impacts on mammals.

3 THE MECHANICS Report produced by a team of experts led by Jacqueline Richter-Menge (sea ice), James Overland (atmosphere) and Andrey Proshutinsky (ocean) Identify team leader active in Arctic terrestrial research Science advisory team consisting of national and international Arctic experts from universities and government laboratories Peer-reviewed Wide dissemination: American Meteorological Society annual climate summary Web site: Electronic version of the report Easily accessible, complete representation of all of the reporting activities Presentations at major conferences
