1 The Circulatory System

2 Essential Questions What are the major systems of the human body?
How does the circulatory system help my body function? What are the major parts of the circulatory system?

3 Try This… Stand in place and put your hand over your heart. You should be able to feel in beating. Now, do jumping jacks for 2 minutes. Stop and put your hand over your heart again. What do you notice? Your heart pumps blood rhythmically throughout your circulatory system. When you exercise, your heart beats faster. When you rest, your heart beats slower.

4 What does the Circulatory System Do?
Food and oxygen are carried by your blood through your circulatory system to every cell in your body. Blood moves nutrients throughout your body, fights infection, and helps control your body temperature. Your body relies on your circulatory system to deliver essential nutrients and oxygen to your organs, tissues, and cells.

5 The Big Idea! The Circulatory System's job is
to carry blood to and from body cells!

6 Main parts of the Circulatory System
1. Heart 2. Arteries 3. Veins 4. Capillaries Together, these parts of the circulatory system transport oxygen, nutrients, and wastes through the body.

7 Heart- The muscle that pumps blood through your blood vessels to all parts of your body.

8 Arteries carry blood AWAY
Artery- Think- Artery = Away, or AA Arteries carry blood AWAY from the heart! A blood vessel that carries blood away from the heart.

9 Vein- The large blood vessels that return the blood to your heart.

10 Capillary- The tiny blood vessels that allows gases and nutrients to pass from blood cells.

11 Capillaries Blood leaves the heart through blood vessels called capillaries. Capillaries are so tiny that blood cells move through them in single file. Capillaries lead to veins- veins return blood back to the heart.

12 What’s In Your… BLOOD digested food red blood cells white blood cells
oxygen waste platelets carbon dioxide plasma

13 Blood has 4 major parts- red blood cell white blood cell plasma platelets Let’s take a look at the components that make up your blood!

14 Red Blood Cells contain haemoglobin, a molecule specially designed to hold oxygen and carry it to cells that need it. can change shape to an amazing extent, without breaking, as it squeezes single file through the capillaries.

15 White Blood Cells White Blood Cells help fight infection- when you are ill, white blood cells come to the rescue.

16 Platelets Platelets are bits of cell broken off larger cells. Platelets help the blood clot, and stop bleeding from wounds. They clump together as soon as you get a cut. The clot then hardens to make a scab and seals the cut.

17 Plasma also contains useful things like:
Plasma is a yellowish liquid that carries the cells and the platelets, which help blood clot. carbon dioxide glucose (sugar) proteins minerals vitamins

18 parts of the Circulatory System- Let's talk about HOW the
Now that you know the parts of the Circulatory System- Let's talk about HOW the Circulatory System works!

19 Our circulatory system is a double circulatory system.
This means it has two parts parts. Lungs Body cells the left side of the system deals with oxygenated blood. the right side of the system deals with deoxygenated blood.

20 The Heart The heart pumps deoxygenated blood into the lungs, where it gets oxygen, returned to the heart, and then pumped out through the aorta to the rest of the body Valves regulate the flow of blood between the chambers

21 The Heart This is a vein. It brings blood from the body, except the lungs. These are arteries. They carry blood away from the heart. 2 atria Coronary arteries- the hearts own blood supply 2 ventricles The heart has four chambers

22 Useless Human Body Facts
By the time you turn 70, your heart will have beat some two-and-a-half billion times (figuring on an average of 70 beats per minute.) Each square inch of human skin consists of twenty feet of blood vessels. According to German researchers, the risk of heart attack is higher on Monday than any other day of the week.

23 Let’s Review A group of different tissues working together to accomplish a common purpose is __________. A. a cell B. an organ C. an organ system D. generalized B.

24 Let’s Review A. Blood B. Oxygen C. Other cells D. Carbon dioxide A.
From what source do cells get their food? A. Blood B. Oxygen C. Other cells D. Carbon dioxide A.

25 Let’s Review C. Why is oxygen important to blood and to the cells?
A. Oxygen helps the blood to clot. B. Oxygen brings food to the cells. C. Oxygen is necessary for cell growth and energy. D. Oxygen is not important -- carbon dioxide is the most important substance to the body.

26 Let’s Review What type of vessels in the circulatory system continuously circulate blood A. Arteries B. Capillaries C. Veins D. All of the Above D.

27 Let’s Review C. How many chambers are in the heart? A. 8 B. 2 C. 4
D. none C.
