2 Mission Statement We want to create a cell phone charger for families in rural Zambia to charge their cell phone without access to electricity. Design and produce a cell phone charger that generates its own electricity using available resources in Zambia. This will allow families and communities in Zambia to communicate better and increase quality of life

3 Important data about Zambia
Zambia is currently politically stable, with a republican government, so it is not hard to get into the country and offer humanitarian aid Zambia has mainly a tropical climate, with a rainy season from October to April and the average rainfall is between 30 and 50 inches, varying depending on the location There are a good amount of rivers, the largest being the Kafue river that runs through the middle

4 Case Study: Village near Kafue
We focused on helping a village around the small town of Kafue about 30 miles southwest of the capital Lusaka Right near the large Kafue river We decided to make our phone charger hydroelectric and it would generate electricity from the current of the river

7 Prototype 2 Improvements
PVC pipe frame for better durability, and make it last longer in water Styrofoam wheel for better durability in water and easier to attach spoons Metal spoons for more durability The axel spins with the turbine so that the turbine won’t move around

8 Spinning Test Prototype 2
Water flow rate of 1.15*10-4 m3/s River current is 320 m3/s 10 spins in 55 seconds Power of 0.25W from sink We calculated power to be over a million watts which wouldn’t be feasible but the turbine would surely spin extremely quick in the actual river current

9 Prototype 3 potential improvements
Make wheel bigger and more durable material Add a platform at the end of one edge to make the product easily stand on its own Add electrical components-use magnets to induce electricity or connect converter on end of axel Make the axel hallow for wires to pass through
