These are the new bus expectations for all buses in District Let pre-school children know this is the poster they will see as they leave school and on the bus to remind them to be Ready to Ride. Emphasize that the BUS Expectations are there to make sure you are READY TO RIDE the bus. Only when students are ready to ride are they safe to ride.

Being ready to ride means staying safe at their bus stop.
The best thing is to be 5-10 minutes early.
Line up in single file.
Approach the bus only when it has stopped and the driver has opened the door.
When the bus arrives remind students to follow the entering the School Bus rules

5. Stay Safe: Know the Danger Zone
The “danger zone” is all the space within 10 giant steps around the bus.
When you are in the “danger zone” the driver can not see you!
Ready to Ride means students know about the danger zone.

6. Stay Safe: Know the Danger Zone
Always cross in front of the bus. Wait for the driver to signal.
Never enter the “danger zone” to pick up papers, mittens, balls, etc.

The most dangerous areas are close to the tires and right in front of the bus.
Remind students the driver can not see them when they are in the danger zone.
REMEMBER! The driver can not see you in the “danger zone!”

-Sit down in your safety position right away
(Face forward, seat on the seat,
back on the back of the seat and feet on or toward the floor)
Being ready to ride means students know how to enter the bus safely.
Line up in single file.
Approach the bus only when it has stopped and the driver has opened the door.
Enter the bus one at a time.
Use the handrail, climb the steps one at a time, find a seat quickly and sit down in your safety position.

back on the back of the seat and feet on or toward the floor)
-Stay in your safety position until it is your bus stop
-Use a quiet voice
-Be nice
-Do what the adults ask you to do
Ready to ride means students know how to sit so they will stay safe while the bus is moving.
We are calling this position “Your safety position.” Directly teach students through modeling what they safety position will look like. Have them pretend they are on the bus and practice.
Remind students they must stay in their seat and sit in their safety position to stay safe until it is time for them to leave the bus at their bus stop.
Remind them it is unsafe to stand or switch seats while the bus is moving.
Speak quietly so the bus driver is not distracted.
Keep hands, feet, and things to self on the bus.
Keep the bus clean and take good care of it.

-Take turns leaving your seat
-Use the handrail
-Wait for the driver’s signal to cross the road
-Go only where you are supposed to go
Being ready to ride means students know how to exit the bus safely.
Stay seated sitting in the safety position until the bus stops.
Take turns exiting.
Always walk and us the hand rail going down the steps.
Wait for the driver’s signal if crossing the road.

Ready to ride behavior will be acknowledged through bus bucks. Drivers will hand out only one as a group recognition for Ready to Ride Behavior. One student will carry it into the school and hand it to the office staff. Each school will add an additional layer of recognition on to reinforce ready to ride behaviors.

After teaching this bus lesson have students take the required bus test.
