2 Healthy Growth at Any Stage
Grade 2 – Lesson 2 Lesson # 2 Healthy Growth at Any Stage Learning Goal Apply self-awareness skills as they outline the basic stages of human development and related bodily changes, and identify factors that are important for healthy growth and living throughout life.

3 Basic Human Stages of Development
Grade 2 – Lesson 2 Basic Human Stages of Development Minds On Explain to students that the human body undergoes many amazing changes from infancy to adulthood. Review the stages by asking the following questions: “How old are you when you are an infant/ a child/ an adolescent/ an adult/ an older adult?” “What does an infant/ a child/ an adolescent/ an adult/ an older adult’s body look like?” “How does the body change during different stages of life?”

4 Time to Move Directions:
Grade 2 – Lesson 2 Time to Move Directions: Take a look around the room for the five developmental stages posters. Listen to the change being read aloud. Move to the stage you think that change happens in. Action Post the Developmental Stages Posters around the room (click the title of the slide to open the hyperlink to the file). Call out the changes listed below: Work and family are important (adulthood) Friendships and belonging to a group become increasingly important (child) Emotional changes occur (adolescent) The first teeth appear (infant) The skin becomes wrinkled (older adult) A person learns how to use the toilet (child) Height increases by half compared to length at birth (infant) Bodies mature (adolescent) A person’s memory may decline (older adult) Consider assigning an on-the-spot physical activity (See Ophea’s 50 Fitness Activities Appendix) to each stage, which students can complete when they get there while waiting for the next change to be called.

5 Mind Mapping Directions:
Grade 2 – Lesson 2 Mind Mapping Directions: Create a mind map that looks like this one, with the stage name in the centre. “What factors are important for healthy growth and living at this stage?” Write your thoughts on your mind map. Action Divide the class into small groups, one for each stage. Explain the concept of a mind map, as a way to brainstorm thoughts and put them on paper. Ask the class to brainstorm factors that are important for healthy growth and living at that stage (e.g., for “child”: eating well, being active, getting enough sleep, and having people to care for you). Ask groups to share their ideas with the class. Click on “Mind Mapping” hyperlink to access resource.
