2 Objectives Evaluate the use of symbolism in poetry and fiction.
Identify phrases in sentences. Homework: 1. Finish Chapters 5-8 in LotF and the study guide by Tuesday 19th 2. VCR 9 flashcards

3 Warm Up-identify phrases
Running with scissors is a bad idea. Running with scissors, Mark was not destined for great things. To run with scissors was my ultimate downfall. Milly, mowing the lawn was not a good idea today. I like the girl spilling the plate of cake on her dress.

4 VCR 8 Quiz Get your laptops and pull up the quiz. No talking!
When finished, take out LotF and read.

5 Group Practice – Close Reading Week 1
Get into groups of 4. Assign one member of the group to get your reading packets from me. Use your answer sheets to discuss the answers. ->Use your rationale in your discussions. You must have one written. When you establish a group answer, write it in the group answer portion of the answer sheet.

19 A Work of Artifice Symbolism in Poetry

20 Symbolism Evaluation Open a blank Google Doc and title it, “ Symbolism Evaluation”. Analyze the poem for symbolism. Write down the at least 5 words from the poem and the connotative meanings from the text. When you have finished, write one sentence explaining the main idea of the poem. How did symbolism play a role in your understanding of the poem?

22 Now that you have read it…
Create your own poem based off of “A Work of Artifice”. In the original, the poem’s point of view is through the gardener’s eyes; I want you to create a poem that is taken from the aspect of the “bonsai tree.” Underline the words that you use to illustrate symbolism and define their figurative meaning below.

23 Lord of the Flies Time Take out your LotF book and read. This is a good time to answer the study guide questions and annotate. Based on our lecture, annotate for symbolism in LotF.

24 Closure - 3,2,1 Write: 3 things you learned about symbolism today.
2 examples of Gerund phrases. 1 question you have regarding the lecture.
