2
Mutations A mistake that occurs within the DNA Types of Mutations
Deletion – some of the nitrogen bases get removed from the DNA Addition – nitrogen bases get added to the DNA Transformation – where nitrogen bases get switched on the DNA
3
The Effects of Mutations
Mutations can be harmful Example: Cancer Mutations can be helpful Anything to help the organism to survive Mutations can neither help or be harmful
4
Advances in Genetics Selective Breeding – The process of selecting a few organisms with desired traits to serve as parents for the next generation. Inbreeding – involves crossing two individuals that have identical or similar sets of alleles. Hybridization –breeders cross two genetically different individuals.
5
Advances in Genetics 2 Cloning – an organism that is genetically identical to the organism from which is produced. Cloning in plants – “cutting” you cut a piece of the plant off and grow another plant from it. Human Cloning – good or evil?
6
Advances in Genetics 3 Genetic Engineering – genes from one organism are transferred into the DNA of another organism Bacteria injected with DNA to produce insulin Plants injected with bacteria DNA to survive cold temperatures, resist insects, deal with poor soil conditions ect.

Advances in Genetics 4 )AHHH(
DNA fingerprinting - using DNA to figure out crimes. CSI, Law and Order, etc.
8
Human Genome Project The main goal of the Human Genome Project is to identify the DNA sequence of every gene in the human genome.
