Describe the two characters Focus on why they are different What do their differences reveal about their personalities? 1. Preview the prompt What important words need to be highlighted? 2. Identify your text evidence Find 3 quotes to kernel from the text.

2 Kernelling your Quotes—Montag
“Montag grinned the fierce grin of all men singed and driven back by flame It never went away that smile, it never ever went away, as long as he remembered.” --Bradbury, pg. 2 Montag quotes: pgs 1- 2, 8-9, 30, How does Montag’s appearance play into his character? How does his character act or change in the novel? 1. In each of your quotes, underline the most important words/phrases 2. For every kernel, craft an original sentence, explaining the meaning in your own words

3 Kernelling your Quotes—Clarisse
“Her face was slender and milk-white, and in it was a kind of gentle hunger that touched over everything with tireless curiosity.” --Bradbury, pg. 3 Clarisse quotes: pgs. 3, 5, 20-21, 26-28 What is it that makes Clarisse different? Why is she so interesting to Montag? 1. In each of your quotes, underline the most important words/phrases 2. For every kernel, craft an original sentence, explaining the meaning in your own words

4 Crafting your Thesis Re-read your original sentences under the quotes you have kernelled Think carefully about the ideas you are creating in response to the question Re-read the question if necessary Summarize your thoughts into one clear sentence that directly answers the question “Montag can be described as ______ while Clarisse is _______ to show . . .” or “The characters contrast each other in that . . .” You WILL NOT use text evidence in your Thesis Statement!!! This will become your Thesis Statement and will be the first sentence in your SAR Thesis statements are your topic sentence This topic sentence is your main idea in your answer Your thesis should address the prompt and guide your answer

5 Crafting your SAR Use your commentary sentences as your supporting statements Revise/reorder your sentences as necessary Use transition statements if needed Your underlined kernels will become your “quotes” in your final answer Enter your kernels into your original sentences Your final SAR should be sentences long. Make sure you have at least 3 kernels in your answer. Your answer should have a natural, conversational flow.

6 Crafting Your SAR—Fatal Flaws
When writing, you should avoid the following Tips for avoiding these flaws “To me,” “In my opinion,” “I think,” The entire answer is your opinion Just say it “Gonna,” “wanna,” “tryna,” “Going to,” “Want to,” “Trying to” “In conclusion,” “To start with,” “To begin” These phrases overstate the beginning and end of your answer These are weak transitions Avoid subjective openings by crossing out these phrases Before your final SAR, simply eliminate these phrases from your answer Re-read your SAR to correct any slang/colloquial words Correcting these mistakes make your work sound more academic and professional Choose meaningful transitions “The author states,” “As can be seen,” “in other words,” “Overall,” “All things considered,”
