Pablo Picasso Born in Spain in 1881
His first paintings were sad in nature. This was called his Blue Period. Happier paintings followed and this was called his Rose Period. Created Cubism by painting objects from many angles and using geometric shapes. It has been said that Picasso painted what he thought, not what he saw.

Cubism Picasso was one of the founders of cubism, which was a different, new way to look at art and create art. Cubism breaks down the subject matter and puts it back together again. Kind of like humpty, dumpty. It puts it back together using simplified shapes and forms. Picasso used bright, bold colors.

Cubism Characteristics
Cubism is a modern style of painting that has the following characteristics: Cubist art is “fragmented” – or divided into parts- which are made from geometric shapes Paints used by artist tend to be opaque (can’t see through it). Elements or areas in the painting have sharp and distinct edges
9
Is Cubist art symmetrical?
Symmetrical is when you can draw a line down the center of the painting and the 2 sides would be mirror images of each other. Asymmetrical is when you can draw a line down the center of the painting and the 2 sides would not match or create a mirror image.

Tints and Shades by adding white or black, 1 color can have different values – light to dark Black is used to “tone” (darken) White is used to “tint” (lighten) By changing the value of a color we can change the mood it creates and also create contrast

Step by Step 1. Practice/planning sheet
2. Put name on your paper and turn it over. 3. Use thick sharpie lines to draw your face – if you think you made a mistake, try to turn it into a geometric shape. 4. Add geometric shapes to face, clothes and background.

Now it’s time to add the color!
Chalk pastels are easy to smudge and blend with your finger. You can layer colors on top of each other. 1. Use Light colors first to create an “underpainting” for your entire artwork– use your finger to blend 2. Add white and blend to make a tint 3. Layer and blend darker colors on top 4. Add black and blend to make a shade 5. Save the BLACK for last!
